Home Defense

On January 10, I posted about our divine duty as fathers to provide for the protection of our family. Accordingly, I today purchased at the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Sandy, Utah, a Winchester 12 Gauge shotgun. It accepts both 3" and 2.75" shells. It has a shorter barrel (18.5") than a shotgun used for hunting, (such as the Remington 12 Gauge I previously owned but sold), but is more ideal for home defense. As peripherals for this awesome tool I have sufficient ammo for any home defense scenario which I pray never occurs, plus any clay-pigeon scenario, which I anticipate (with much anticipation) may occur the next warm Saturday we get here. After all, what good is a tool if one is not skilled in its use? All in all, I'm excited to be fulfilling my God-mandated responsibility to provide for the protection of my family.

Thanks for your comments!

Two thoughts in reply:
1) While I would agree with defending the wisdom of teaching/training people to use guns, because it makes people safer around guns when they are trained, at the same time, I would defend a mother's right to decide what her son will and will not learn. I feel if she asked her brother not to teach her son how to handle guns, he should respect her rights as a parent to guide her son's education. Yes, I think that her decision to not allow her son such education is stupid, but I would respect her right as a parent to make that stupid decision.

2) You say "She is very pro-gun for protection in the home as long as the person handling the weapon is trained to use it." I would alter that -- for safety considerations, it is important that **everyone** in the home be trained/educated about guns, not just the person handling the weapon. My daughters will NOT be handling my shotgun, and they have been warned I will bloody their bottoms if I catch them touching it without my permission and in my presence. But it's not just a warning of the sort of me excercising my position of authority to command them. I have explained to them *why* such a strong warning, that guns are a tool, but a very powerful tool that is dangerous if not handled correctly. And, I have had them hold the gun and pull the trigger, to get a feel for it and overcome the 'mystery' aspect to it. I have helped them understand that my serious warning is because I love them and don't want any harm to come to them. I don't want their obedience to this command to be just due to fear, but due to understanding as well. And, for their safety, I want them to be familiar with guns and having a proper respect for them.

dreaminbig emailed me directly with a followup:

I may not have done a good enough job explaining the result of the discussions Dr. Laura had with the woman, which brought her around to admitting that if there was someone lurking through her house, intending to do harm to her son and daughter, she would do anything, at whatever price, to protect her kids.

The most important aspect to me is, what length would I go to to ensure my wife's and girls' safety, and for me, I would even risk imprisonment by a jury that convicted me of killing someone in my own home whilst protecting my family, as long as they survived.

I also completely agree with what you say about everyone in the home being taught and trained, it just wasn't covered that way in the show.
