Strong Body, Strong Mind
"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks."
- Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, (Memorial Edition) Lipscomb and Bergh, editors.

What a bold statement. This is the first time I have ever disagreed with a statement by Thomas Jefferson. At least now we know he was not perfect just like the rest of us.
Alma 48:14 says, "Now the Nephites were taught to defend themselves against their enemies, even to the shedding of blood if it were necessary; yea, and they were also taught never to give an offense, yea, and never to raise the sword except it were against an enemy, except it were to preserve their lives."
It is important for us to own a gun and to be versed in its use for the protection of our families. But using guns for sport is inappropriate and does nothing to enhance the mind. In some cases it may even degrade the mind. On the other hand, a little relaxation and comradery are easily acquired through the use of a ball.
